A 36-year-old Filipina digital nomad based in Dubai has made history as the first Filipino to travel to all 193 United Nations-recognized countries using solely a Philippine passport. Kach Medina Umandap completed her monumental journey on January 6, 2025, in Sudan, overcoming the challenges of visa restrictions associated with a low-ranked passport.

Umandap’s achievement stands out not only because of her age—accomplishing the feat in her mid-30s—but also because she relied entirely on her Philippine passport, without the advantage of dual citizenship or permanent residency. “This is proof that being Filipino is not a limitation when it comes to exploring the world,” Umandap shared.

A proud member of the Filipino World Travelers (FWT), where she has served as an ambassador since 2023, Umandap uses her platform to inspire other Filipinos to pursue global exploration despite the barriers they may face. Through her blogs Twomonkeystravelgroup.com and Filipinopassport.com, she offers practical tips and insights on how to navigate the world as a Filipino traveler.

Her journey included visits to 26 African countries in 2024, culminating in her arrival in Port Sudan this January. Notably, she became one of the first tourists to visit the region post-conflict, offering hope for the revival of Sudan’s tourism.

Her accomplishment has also drawn international recognition, including being named a finalist in the 2022 NomadMania Travel Awards for the Biggest Low Passport Index Traveler category. According to NomadMania, fewer than 500 people worldwide have achieved the feat of visiting all UN member states, making her success particularly remarkable.

“To my fellow women, Filipinos, and backpackers—yes, you can have the traveling life you want, earn money, and be successful at the same time,” Umandap emphasized, sharing her empowering message in Gala: Adventures of the Most Well-Traveled Filipinos.

Umandap will celebrate her achievement with a homecoming event in Cebu on January 13, 2025. Her inspiring journey can be followed at https://bio.site/kachumandap.

Cancer, a life-altering diagnosis that brings uncertainty and fear, tests the resilience and strength of those who face it. Among the many who have battled this disease is Engr. Lilac Hosalla Schonberg, a mechatronic robotics engineer and entrepreneur based in Abu Dhabi. Diagnosed with malignant cancer in August 2017, she confronted the challenges head-on, navigating a journey filled with anguish, determination, and eventual triumph. Now cancer-free, she has transformed her experience into a powerful story of hope, using it to inspire and empower others.

More than seven years ago, Engr. Lilac received the shocking news that her tumor was malignant. “I was plunged into denial, frustration, and despair,” she recalls. Despite leading a healthy lifestyle, she found herself grappling with the fear of an uncertain future. Her husband’s comforting words, “Skat, you will be okay,” became her anchor during those turbulent times.

The emotional toll of cancer weighed heavily on her. “The fear of recurrence haunted me, affecting my sleep and mental health,” she shares. Yet, her determination to reclaim her life and inspire others drove her forward.

By April 2018, after nine months of treatment, Engr. Lilac was declared cancer-free. This pivotal moment transformed her perspective on life and gave her a renewed sense of purpose. “I survived because my struggles are meant to inspire others to toughen up, celebrate life, and thrive towards one’s purpose,” she says.

Building a cancer-free life

Engr. Lilac’s story underscores the importance of proactive health measures in the fight against breast cancer. Her journey is a powerful reminder, especially in the UAE, where breast cancer remains the most prevalent cancer among women. According to the UAE National Cancer Registry’s 2021 report, breast cancer accounted for approximately 20.3% of all malignant cases, with 1,139 new diagnoses that year. The age-standardized incidence rate was reported at 52 per 100,000 females. Unlike global trends, a significant proportion of cases in the UAE are found in women under the age of 50, emphasizing the need for heightened awareness and early detection among younger populations.

Efforts to improve breast cancer outcomes in the UAE have been notable. Screening programs have led to a decline in advanced-stage cases, with localized disease detection increasing from 10% in 2011 to 25% in 2017, according to Burjeel Medical News. These achievements reflect advancements in mammography and public health campaigns, which align with Engr. Lilac’s advocacy for early detection and proactive health management.

Prioritizing health and wellness

Engr. Lilac emphasizes the importance of mental, physical, and emotional well-being in building a cancer-free life. “I take care of my health through the food I consume, regular exercise, and professional care,” she explains. Her diet focuses on organic fruits, vegetables, green tea, whole grains, beans, and healthy fats, while avoiding sugar, processed foods, and excessive caffeine.

“I don’t smoke, and I limit alcohol intake—zero is best,” Engr. Lilac advises. She underscores the significance of regular check-ups, screening tests, and early detection, particularly in the UAE, where efficient healthcare systems prioritize preventive care. Stress management has also become a vital part of her routine. “Stress is how the brain and body react to challenges,” she notes. To minimize its impact, she plans her schedule, avoids stressors, and prioritizes self-care.

“Life is about more than just work,” she adds. As a robotics and STEM educator, Engr. Lilac juggles multiple roles, including leading special education programs and supporting children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Despite her demanding career, she maintains a work-life balance, taking breaks and nurturing her personal life.

Engr. Lilac also credits intermittent fasting, organic diets, Ayurveda, and stem cell regimens for her well-being. “Every survivor’s journey is unique, so it’s essential to determine what works for you,” she advises.

Advocating for change

Beyond her personal health journey, Engr. Lilac has become a fierce advocate for others. As a breast cancer survivor, she leads awareness campaigns like the QAT Pink Tour and mentors women through the Babae Ako movement. Her advocacy focuses on empowering battered women, enhancing their livelihood skills, and building self-efficacy.

Her work in robotics and STEM education further amplifies her impact. As co-founder of QIWI Robotics and Technologies Group, she develops interactive programs to support children with ASD and inspires students to embrace technology. Her contributions to the Emirates Mars Mission and Emirates Lunar Mission highlight her dedication to innovation and education.

A message of hope

Engr. Lilac’s journey has inspired countless individuals. Her message to others is simple yet profound: “Yes, I had cancer, but cancer never had me.”

To fellow survivors, she offers these words: “Smile and say, ‘I choose to win every single day.’ Never lose your zest for life, even in the face of a scary diagnosis. If there’s a will to win, there’s a way to live.”

For Engr. Lilac, life is a series of unpredictable challenges. “You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf,” she says. Her second lease on life is a reminder to celebrate resilience, embrace purpose, and keep moving forward.

Milkfish (Chanos chanos), locally known as “bangus,” may offer a cost-effective solution for treating severe burns and injuries, according to a groundbreaking study by Ateneo de Manila University scientists. The research highlights the potential of bangus skin as a sustainable alternative for wound dressings, particularly in developing countries like the Philippines.

When skin is extensively damaged, such as in third-degree burns that affect all layers of the skin, doctors often use artificial skin to protect the area and promote tissue regeneration. While tilapia skin has been explored in previous studies, this marks the first time milkfish skin has been evaluated for medical use.

Milkfish is a staple in Filipino aquaculture, widely cultivated and readily available. The study suggests that utilizing bangus skin for wound care could significantly reduce reliance on imported medical supplies, while also addressing environmental concerns by repurposing fish skin, a material typically discarded as waste.

“Among the economically significant fish species in the Philippines, bangus is one of the most widely cultivated. However, limited research has been conducted on the suitability of milkfish skin for wound care,” the researchers noted in their paper. They emphasized its abundance and collagen-rich properties as key factors in expanding donor options for fish skin grafting.

The researchers, Dr. Janice Ragaza and Bianca Patrice Go from Ateneo’s Aquatic and Fisheries Resources Laboratory, compared milkfish and tilapia skins obtained from a Metro Manila market. Both samples underwent processing to ensure cleanliness and uniformity, with some treated using a silver nanoparticle (AgNP) solution for sterilization, while untreated samples served as controls.

The AgNP-treated bangus samples demonstrated complete resistance to bacterial and fungal growth, with microscopy revealing that milkfish skin retained its collagen integrity as effectively as tilapia skin. These findings suggest that milkfish skin could serve as a viable, affordable option for wound care in areas with limited access to advanced medical treatments.

“By demonstrating that milkfish skin can be effectively sterilized and used similarly to tilapia skin, this research provides innovative, cost-effective, and sustainable wound-healing solutions. This finding has the potential to transform wound care in underserved areas,” the study concluded.

The paper, titled “Determining the Applicability of Milkfish (Chanos chanos) for Skin Grafting through Microbiological and Histological Evaluations,” was published in the November 2024 issue of BIO Web of Conferences.
