The Filipino community in Dubai is mourning the loss of Jeanelyn “Ji” Jarder, a beloved visual artist, interior designer, and community leader. Ji passed away on January 3, 2025, after a courageous battle with breast cancer, which she was diagnosed with in 2022. News of her passing was shared on Facebook, where heartfelt tributes poured in, reflecting the indelible mark she left on many lives.

Ji, originally from Bacolod City, Philippines, was known for her vibrant artworks inspired by the MassKara Festival. Her creative journey reached a milestone in 2018 when she exhibited her work titled Whimsy Wonders of Mind at the Philippine Consulate General in Dubai. This exhibition was part of the consulate’s initiative to highlight emerging Filipino artists and was celebrated by officials and community members alike.

Despite her diagnosis, Ji remained an active force in the Filipino community. In March 2024, she became the president and founding member of Las Damas de Rizal – Dubai and Northern Emirates Chapter, an organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of Dr. Jose Rizal. Ji spearheaded numerous initiatives, including the Walk of Hope event, which supported cancer patients and their families.

Community members and leaders pay tribute

Ji’s remarkable life and contributions were honored by the Philippine Embassy in the UAE in a heartfelt message from Philippine Ambassador to the UAE, Alfonso A. Ver: “I express sadness over the passing of Lady Jeanelyn “Ji” Rillo Jarder, Founding President of the Las Damas de Rizal-Dubai and Northern Emirates. Her courage, creativity, and unwavering dedication to the Filipino community were a testament to a life of purpose and passion.”

“Even in the face of her illness, Lady Ji continued to serve as a pillar of hope and strength for others. Her leadership in organizing transformative initiatives like the “Walk of Hope” was a powerful reflection of her resilience and commitment to uplifting lives.”

The Philippine Consul General to Dubai and the Northern Emirates, Marford Angeles, remembered Ji’s dedication: “Little did I know that this would be the last time I would see Ji, at a Christmas program she spearheaded with Las Damas de Rizal and OKOR at the Consulate. While battling pain and health issues, she valiantly devoted her time and effort organizing these activities for the less fortunate in the community. Team PH in UAE is praying that the Lord will bless and comfort her family and loved ones at this time of sorrow.”

Irene Villaroya, a fellow community member, reflected on their friendship: “Rest peacefully, my dear Ji Jarder. Thank you for the friendship. Even when others tried to create division between us, we remained true to our bond. You were a source of comfort during my darkest days, even when you had your own battles. ‘Till we meet again, Ji.”

Bethoven Filomeno, a senior faculty member and community leader, highlighted Ji’s servant leadership: “I am totally saddened to hear about the passing of our dear friend Ms. Ji Jarder. A true example of servant leadership and compassion for the community. Despite her health conditions, she still chose to serve her beloved community. Lady Ji will truly be missed by everyone.”

Entrepreneur Nouel Omamalin, a close friend, shared his grief: “To our cheerleader, Ji Jarder, your friendship and battle will never be forgotten. You’ve shown strength, love, and compassion all throughout. We already miss you!”

Malou Prado, a business owner and friend, expressed her sorrow: “You will always be missed more than words can express. Rest in peace, Ji Jarder. Our friendship will never end, and your memory will live on in our hearts forever.”

Community champion Josie Conlu reminisced about Ji’s vibrant spirit: “This is how I want to remember you, Ji—full of life, radiating strength and positivity, even in the face of challenges. Damo guid nga salamat, langga. Rest easy, our dear Ji—you will always be remembered with love and gratitude.”

Mary Jane Veloso, who narrowly escaped execution in Indonesia in 2015 for drug trafficking, has returned to the Philippines after more than a decade behind bars. The 39-year-old, a former domestic helper and mother of two, arrived in Manila early Wednesday under tight security and was immediately transferred to a women’s prison facility.

Veloso was arrested in 2010 in Yogyakarta after authorities discovered 2.6 kilograms of heroin hidden in her suitcase. She has consistently claimed she was an unwitting drug mule. Convicted and sentenced to death, Veloso was spared at the last minute, and her case became a focus of negotiations between the Philippines and Indonesia.

Her emotional return was marked by a reunion with her two sons, who rushed to embrace her inside the prison compound. Speaking to reporters, Veloso expressed gratitude and hope for clemency. “I’m so happy to be home. I appeal to the president to grant me clemency,” she said.

The transfer was part of an agreement between the two nations, allowing Veloso to serve her sentence in the Philippines while respecting the Indonesian court’s ruling. Justice Undersecretary Raul Vasquez said clemency is being considered by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., while Indonesian authorities have stated they would honor any decision made by the Philippines.

Foreign Minister Enrique Manalo expressed gratitude to Indonesia for facilitating Veloso’s return, describing it as a “momentous day” and acknowledging the timing ahead of the Christmas season.

Pia Wurtzbach has been recognized as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) awardees of 2024, honoring her exceptional contributions to humanitarian service and social work. The prestigious recognition was presented during a ceremony held in Quezon City on Sunday.

Wurtzbach, a former Miss Universe, has been a steadfast advocate for various causes, including HIV awareness and mental health. Her efforts have been amplified through her partnership with LoveYourself, an HIV advocacy organization, which expressed its admiration for her on social media, stating, “Your dedication to creating a better world continues to inspire countless individuals.”

In line with her advocacy, Wurtzbach recently organized an auction of her pageant memorabilia to support LoveYourself’s upcoming youth center, further underscoring her commitment to social work.

Joining Wurtzbach in the humanitarian category is Jenica Beatriz Dizon-Mountford. Other 2024 TOYM honorees include Ziga Dulay for arts and culture (TV/Film), Venazir Martinez and Jose Gabriel Mejia for arts and culture, Billie Crystal Dumaliang for environmental leadership and community development, Roscinto Ian Lumbres for forestry and applied sciences, Pia Ranada for journalism, Dennis Umali for veterinary medicine, and Brent Andrew Viray for rural medicine and surgery.

The Philippines ranked third in Pornhub’s 2024 Year in Review, dropping from its second-place position in 2023. The United States retained the top spot, followed by France, with the Paris Olympics contributing to France’s rise, according to the platform’s analysts.

Despite the lower rank, the Philippines continued to stand out with significant engagement. Mobile phones accounted for 97% of visits from the country—the highest globally—while Filipino women made up 59% of traffic, maintaining their position as the leading demographic of female viewers for the fourth consecutive year.

Search terms such as “Pinay” rose to third place globally, up from fifth in 2023, while “Pinoy” also featured prominently among local searches. Popular categories included “Hentai,” “Japanese,” and “Reality,” the latter of which saw a +642% increase in viewership compared to other regions. Trending searches this year ranged from “beautiful sex” (+668%) to “extreme squirting” (+623%).

Filipino visitors also showed a preference for American pornstars, with Lexi Lore and Johnny Sins topping the list, followed by local model Sharinami.

The platform noted a broader global trend towards more meaningful and realistic adult content, with rising searches for terms like “demure” and “mindful pleasure.” Analysts attributed this shift to changing cultural norms and viral influences, including videos like “Hawk Tuah,” which garnered millions of views.

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has expressed strong support for improving voting access for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and Filipinos abroad through innovative methods like electronic and postal voting.

This backing comes after Senate Committee Report No. 369 was submitted on November 27, 2024. The report, prepared by the Senate Committees on Electoral Reforms and Finance and sponsored by Senator Imee R. Marcos, proposes amendments to the Overseas Absentee Voting Act. These changes aim to address challenges faced by overseas voters and prevent disenfranchisement.

“Our OFWs and overseas Filipinos contribute significantly to our economy. We owe it to them to ensure they can participate in electing leaders who value their contributions,” Cayetano said in a Manila Standard report.

The proposal outlines the introduction of electronic voting through secure online platforms and postal voting for those with limited internet access. It also includes a specialized system for seafarers, enabling them to vote electronically while at sea.

Cayetano highlighted the economic importance of OFWs, citing their $33.5 billion in remittances in 2023, which accounted for 8.5% of the country’s GDP. He emphasized that ensuring their voting rights aligns with Article II, Section 5 of the Philippine Constitution, which mandates a secure system for absentee voting for Filipinos abroad.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will oversee the implementation of these new voting methods, ensuring they are secure, accessible, and user-friendly.

Cayetano is optimistic that the proposed measures, supported by a majority in the Senate, will enhance overseas voting for millions of Filipinos in time for the 2025 elections. “Our OFWs are vital to our nation. It’s time we give them a stronger voice in shaping our future,” he said.
