One hundred forty-six (146) participants attended a gala night and oath-taking ceremony for the newly elected officers of the Philippine Bahrain Caregiver Society (PBCS), recently held at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel in Manama. The momentous occasion marked the notable transition to the organization’s new leadership while paying tribute to the invaluable contributions of Filipino caregivers in Bahrain.

The event was honored by the presence of Her Excellency Anne Jalando-on Louis, the Philippine Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, as the guest of honor.

She spoke about the Philippines’ significant contribution to the caregiving sector and commended Filipino caregivers for their empathy and dedication, which really make them stand out from other caregiving professionals globally.

Ambassador Louis acknowledged the visibility and enthusiasm for volunteerism exhibited by PBCS, recognizing it as an exemplary model of community service.

She delivered an exceptional speech filled with touching stories depicting the commitment of the Filipino caregivers. Among the stories she shared was the experience of a caregiver who refused to leave his patient at a critical time while working in Israel.

In the midst of a challenging circumstance, he was given the opportunity to withdraw and prioritize his own comfort and safety; however, he chose to remain and attend to his longtime patient, exemplifying genuine selflessness.

The profound sense of obligation and the bond he shared with his patient moved many in the audience to tears.

This story showcased the compassion and dedication that Filipino caregivers show in their work, highlighting the significant impact they have on the lives of those they care for.
Ambassador Louis officiated the oath-taking ceremony for the newly appointed officers during the event kicking off their term and reinforcing their dedication to promoting the mission and values of PBCS.

The new set of officers of PBCS who took their oath: President, Maria F. Perez; Vice President, Mary Rose Rodriguez; Secretary, Joy Sacabon; Treasurer, Fleur Dubouzet; Assistant Treasurer, Mary Joy Remoroza. Nevertheless, it is essential to recognize the amazing strength when we come together. When we unite as one community, we possess the power to bring about significant change.”

It was announced during the gathering that all the proceeds from the event would be channeled directly to PBCS programs such as first aid, health screening, and caregiving services.

In her motivating speech, the re-elected President of PBCS, Maria F. Perez, recalled the challenges and struggles that the organization had to go through since its founding four years ago.

She noted that the difficulties presented by pandemic have compelled PBCS to establish its role within the community, enabling it to provide greater assistance to others during these extraordinary times.

She thanked everyone for their valuable inputs as partners especially the government of Bahrain and the Philippine Embassy for their support. Their cooperation has been very instrumental in the success of several projects designed for community development and helping those in desperate situations.

Maria consistently recognized the organizations that has worked hand in hand with them. She demonstrated in this manner that through unity, many lives have been significantly changed. Together they have formed a way where hope and support were really exemplified through community cooperation.

It was truly a night of Christmas spirit as Katolikong Pinoy sa Bahrain concluded its annual Simbang Gabi at the Sacred Heart Church.

From 15th to 23rd December, around 1,000 Filipino parishioners were in attendance to join the anticipated Mass at 8:30 PM each evening was officiated by Fr. Anthony Almazan, OFM Cap, the Assistant Parish Priest and Spiritual Director of the community, together with the visiting priest, Fr. Jeffrey Torres, OFM Cap.

The nine-day devotional period culminated in a festive Christmas Eve, highlighted by the continuation of the Dawn Masses at 4:00 AM. This year, the final Mass held particular significance as it was officiated by His Excellency Bishop Aldo Berardi, 0.SS.T.

Enhancing the Christmas Eve celebration, a special Panunuluyan play was performed at the start of the ninth day Dawn Mass. It is a beautiful tradition that touches the heart of the Christmas story with emphasis on hope and hospitality. It brings the community together in the search for shelter of the Holy Family to remind everyone of the compassion and generosity that must be opened up to them in this season. This touching reenactment not only entertains the parishioners but also binds them closer to the true meaning of Christmas, thus making the Dawn Mass a real celebration.

Reflecting on the meaning of Simbang Gabi this holiday season, Salve Nicodemus, a teacher at Philippine School Bahrain shared her thoughts on Simbang Gabi—a tradition that resonates deeply with overseas workers, ”Simbang Gabi reminds me of spiritual preparation for Christmas. It gives me an avenue toward reconnecting with my faith, as well as the people surrounding me. It gives that sense of community and warmth, therefore enabling me to appreciate gratitude and humility toward the blessings in this season’’.

The traditional Simbang Gabi celebrations were more than just a religious event. The Mass gatherings afforded wonderful opportunities for parishioners to interact, over traditional Philippine delicacies like bibingka and puto bumbong, creating a community-like atmosphere.

Bro. Ulysses Dela Cruz, Coordinator of the Katolikong Pinoy sa Bahrain, conveyed sincere appreciation to Sacred Heart Church for its steadfast support during the Simbang Gabi period. He also expressed gratitude to all parishioners for their enthusiastic involvement, which contributed to the celebration’s success. ‘’Your commitment to advocating for the welfare of Overseas Filipino Workers, your relentless efforts to address our concerns, and your compassionate leadership have profoundly impacted us all’’

Several community organizations actively participated during the Mass offertory, further strengthening the sense of unity. These included Pinay IKaw Na (PIN), Filipino American Association of Bahrain (Fil Am Bahrain), Travelers Tribe Masonic Club of Bahrain (T2), Philippine Bahrain Caregiver Society (PBCS), and Filipino Writers’ Circle (FilWrite). Their participation highlighted the collective spirit of the Filipino community, united in faith and service.

The Simbang Gabi celebrations in Bahrain not only honored the Christmas spirit but also reinforced the bonds of community and faith among Filipino parishioners, making this year’s observance truly memorable.

A mixture of emotions filled the departure area of Bahrain International Airport with unstoppable photo opportunity, the last-minute advice amidst the clattering of rolling suitcases where friends, co-teachers, and family member gathered to bid farewell to Ruth Mirhan Orense as she prepared for her journey to Virginia, USA.

Ruth, an inspiring educator with a passion for teaching, had secured a coveted spot in an exchange program that would take her across the globe. The excitement of new opportunities ahead was palpable, yet the bittersweet feeling of leaving behind those she cherished was equally present.

Her son, Errol John, stood closed by, sharing in the emotions of the moment as he offered his own heartfelt farewell. Friends and colleagues showered Ruth with last-minute advice, reminding her to embrace every moment of her journey and to carry the spirit of Bahrain with her.

As she sank into her seat on the plane, an overwhelming surge of emotion welled up in her—excitement bordered by anxiety—and her heart skipped beats at the countless new experiences lying ahead.

The flight to Virginia felt like a flight into home; her mind engulfed with pictures of beautiful scenery and warm hospitality ahead.  In her imagination, the bustling atmosphere that provides a sharp contrast to the serene desert landscapes of Bahrain, where she spent 17 years of her life.

As the plane touched down, she took a deep breath, bracing herself, she gazed out the window, ready to face whatever beyond the clouds.

Being selected as an Ambassador Teacher at John W. Tolbert Elementary School in Loudon County Public School District feels like hitting the jackpot. It represents not just a recognition of her extreme efforts but a culmination of countless hours of hard work, preparation, and unwavering faith.

Ruth expressed profound gratitude to Participate Learning for the opportunity that has significantly altered her personal and professional path.

She viewed the exchange program as enhancing the value of such a platform for cross-cultural understanding and collaboration. ‘’The program will expose you to another culture for fresh insights and approaches, which you could then apply in your own context, which will turn out to be a fine way to stir up innovative ideas and solidify global networks, she said.

While being an educator is one of those careers that brings satisfaction in return, making a positive contribution to the financial stability of a family, despite challenges faced by educators.

Born in Manila, her heart found resonance in the serene lifestyles of the Mangyan community in Oriental Mindoro.  She was inspired with their way of life that is deeply rooted in simplicity connection, and respect for the environment.

Ruth earned her degree in Bachelor in Elementary Education at Abada College, Pinamalayan, Oriental Mindoro and continued her Master of Art in Education major in Administration and Supervision in Divine Word College of Calapan.  She is currently pursuing her Doctoral Degree in Educational Management major in Special Education in Intercontinental College.

Her role as vice president of Filipino Writers’ Circle (Filwrite) solidified her dedication to contributing to the Filipino community in Bahrain.

Filwrite under the leadership of Cecilia V. Ancheta expressed the collective pride and joy of the group in the inclusion of their fellow member for the teaching exchange program as ambassador, ”This recognition not only underscores her personal success but also a very great opportunity to expose the multifaceted culture of the Filipinos in the diversified training milieus in the United States’’.  ‘’Such an exchange is a transformational potential of education and emphasizes the signification of cross-cultural collaboration towards empowering people and inspiring them’’, she added.

By providing a space for storytelling, poetry, and essays, Filwrite not only amplifies the voices of OFWs but also fosters a sense of belongingness within a global community. It plays a crucial role in preserving and promoting the rich Filipino tradition and culture.

As Ruth reflected on her journey, she couldn’t help but feel a wave of gratitude with the thought of the people in Bahrain who opened their arms to fold her into their midst, ‘’ Bahrain was truly my second home, where friendships forged, laughters, and struggles shared with the warmth memories I would carry forever’’.

From friends who became more like family to locals introducing her to the culture, each added so much appreciation to her experience. She enjoys being surrounded by acts of politeness and hospitality; it eases challenges brought forth by being away from home.

The smiles and stories shared over coffee, the heartfelt conversations, and the collective experiences have not only shaped her identity but have also instilled in her a profound understanding of the importance of community. These memories and bonds will serve as a constant reminder of the power of connection, urging her to seek out new friendships and embrace the unfamiliar as she steps into her next adventure.

The Filipino-American community in Bahrain gathered together to celebrate Thanksgiving, marking the occasion with a heart-warming dinner reflective of both Filipino and American cultures.

A dinner feast, toasting up warmth and hospitality was hosted by Joselito Sarmiento, the Vice President Internal of the Filipino American Association of Bahrain (Fil Am Bahrain) at his residence in Juffair. Professionals and families came together in a solid proof of strong unity and solidarity.

Mr. Sarmiento extended his gratitude to all the guests who attended the dinner. ”Despite being far from our homeland, we came into one spirit of gratitude, celebrating this occasion with glee and conviviality.”

He further added that ‘We may be living thousands of miles away from our families in the Philippines and the U.S., but this event reminded us that we still have much to be thankful for, especially the friendships and support we have found here in Bahrain”.

‘’Giving thanks to the Lord for His goodness and of course appreciating my family for their love and support, I miss eating together with my family at one table. Sharing stories of success and blessings we have received from the Lord. I miss having a wonderful time with my whole family on Thanksgiving’’, Romeo Tagulao, treasurer of Fil Am Bahrain narrated.

One of the visitors, Dr. Kristin Curay Villanueva, a general dentist at Kims Health Medical Center said ” Thanksgiving for me is an opportunity for family, friends and loved ones to come together celebrating connections, achievements, simple joys, and blessings. It is about sharing stories of ethereal moments and timeless memories while reflecting on kindness and generosity towards others in need making it a goal every year to do a profound impact on someone’s life and create a ripple effect of love and positivity”.

Dr. Villanueva has been supporting not only the Fil Am Bahrain on their charitable causes and medical missions but also participates in volunteer work in various group of communities in Bahrain.

During the dinner, a delightful fusion of Filipino and American culinary traditions was served.

Members of Fil Am Bahrain came together to celebrate this cherished American tradition, bringing a sense of home and community. The gathering was filled with joy and fellowship, allowing them to celebrate the core values of gratitude and togetherness in the absence of their families.

Over the years, there has been a very active Filipino-American community in Bahrain working in various sectors. Thanksgiving dinner has been one of many events that constantly remind them of the essence of togetherness and bonding across cultural and geographical boundaries.

Thanksgiving, although primarily an American holiday has been adopted by Filipino Americans in Bahrain, who celebrate it in ways that reflect their experiences as overseas workers, just like most expatriates around the world.

It reminds them that what is essential in the holiday is not the sumptuous food but the association with other people, highlighting how these interactions shape their lives.

One of the highlights of the day was the presence of Consul Bryan Jess Baguio of Philippine Embassy Manama, mounting the platform for an inspiring speech. In his address he highlighted the role of the organizations in promoting health care for Filipinos in Bahrain and the collaborative efforts with the embassy.

The event was honoured by the attendance of Mr. Yusuf Lori, the Director of the Information and Follow-up of the Capital Governorate. An Auxiliary Nursing Program tailored for caregivers and nursing assistants, which can be completed within 6 to 8 months is an intensive program which outfits students with skills and knowledge necessary to survive in the modern competitive world. Further, ATDC offers short courses through licensed and internationally certified instructors for quality education and training to all participants.
